Michael Lichtenstein

Dr. Lichtenstein has overall responsibility for the organization, implementation, coordination and conduct of the Positively Aging® and MORE projects. Dr. Lichtenstein founded the Positively Aging® project in 1993. He has been the primary coordinator, faculty mentor, editor and fund raiser as the project has evolved. Over the past 10 years, he has fostered collaborative interdisciplinary efforts that developed new science and research education programs at the UTHSCSA spanning from the public school setting to post-doctoral training. His formal research training is in Epidemiology and he has been active as an investigator in a cohort study focused on the evolution of disability in Mexican and European American elders, the 'San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging' (Co-Investigator). Since 1998, Dr. Lichtenstein's interests in science and research education have grown. He currently serves as the Program Director for the Frederic C. Bartter General Clinical Research Center at the UTHSCSA and therefore has a broad overview of many of the active clinical research projects involving human subjects in San Antonio. Dr. Lichtenstein is the Program Director for the UTHSCSA Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation Program. Clinically, Dr. Lichtenstein practices primary care Geriatrics and in this capacity works as the Associate Director for Clinical Programs for the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies.

Carolyn Marshall

Dr. Marshall is Project Director for the Positively Aging® and MORE Programs and has primary responsibility for their day-to-day conduct and operation. She has extensive experience in the development of educational materials and programs centering on health promotion and disease prevention. Dr. Marshall coordinates the contacts and recruitment of middle school science teachers from the participating school districts. She plays a key role in the provision of in-school support for teachers during the evaluation and data collection activities of the projects.

Steve Owen

Dr. Owen collaborates with the Programmer Analyst in the development of databases and provides oversight for data quality control procedures. He executes main analyses related to evaluation strategies and the effectiveness of the program. Dr. Owen is Professor in the Center for Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the UTHSCSA.

Ms. Toepperwein is responsible for being the main liaison between participating school districts and UTHSCSA. Ms. Toepperwein develops and conducts in-services and trainings for teachers. She works one-on-one with teachers on curriculum development, lesson planning, and adaptations of the materials. Ms. Toepperwein assists with the analysis and interpretation of the evaluation materials and coordinates with the teacher writing teams to revise the materials. She is a Middle School Science Teacher with more than 20 years of experience.

Ms. Pruski is responsible for being the main liaison between participating school districts and UTHSCSA. Ms. Pruski develops and conducts in-services and trainings for teachers. She is a Middle School Science Teacher with more than 20 years of experience. In 1997, Ms. Pruski was the recipient of the National Science Foundation's Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Ms. Lemelle is responsible for all graphic design and production of health curricula and promotional documents. She acts as a liaison between project staff and other process/production providers and an information resource in matters related to design practices and specialized computer graphic hardware and software. She assists with the coordination of data collection, coding, and data entry for the evaluation of the curricular materials. Ms. Lemelle provides staff support for organizing training programs. She is responsible for coordinating the printing production of curricula with the UTHSCSA Printing Services. She also coordinates with UTHSCSA Computing Resources, and Multimedia and Web Services to see to it that the web site is operational and well maintained

Ms. Liu maintains and performs database development, substantial programming, expansion of the search capacities for the teaching materials, data analysis to examine the data, prepares publication of the research, and tracks procedures for utilizing the curricular materials. Ms. Liu coordinates with UTHSCSA Computing Resources and Multimedia/Web Services to see to it that the web site is operational and well maintained. She serves as the technical service representative for the program at the UTHSCSA. She is responsible for posting revisions and modifications to the web site.
