Activity 1C: Nutrient Research

Research paper:
 
Assign each student or pair of students a nutrient. Students should complete a one page research paper on their nutrient.
 
List of nutrients for research: (Teachers may refer to the Nutrition and Aging Unit, Pre-Activity 1A Fad Diets and Activity 1A Dietary Allowances for more information on the nutrients).
  • Calcium
  • Potassium
  • Iron
  • Sodium
  • Zinc
  • Folic acid
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B 1 (thiamine)
  • Vitamin B 2 (riboflavin)
  • Vitamin B 6 (pyridoxine)
  • Vitamin B 12 (cobalamine)
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin K 
 
In the paper, students should provide answers to the following questions:
  1. How does your body use this nutrient?
  2. In what foods is this nutrient found?
  3. What happens if your body does not have enough (deficiency) or has too much (excess) of this nutrient?
