TEACHER ENRICHMENT INITIATIVES

Activity 2A: Exploring Spreadsheets

The teacher should make a class copy of the data entitled “Sample Data Set” and the information sheet entitled “Data Structure.” The “Data Structure” sheet gives limited information about each column of the HHIE-S spreadsheet.

The following is detailed information on what each column of the HHIE-S spreadsheet represents.
  • column A — is titled subject. This was the number assigned to each person taking the survey.
  • column B — This column holds the age of the person
  • column C — The clients ranked their schooling in years of formal education from 0— meaning “no formal years of education” to 16 meaning “college graduate.”
  • column D — Gender, 1= male, 2= female
  • column E — The participants were asked if they had difficulty hearing: 0 = no, 1 = yes
  • column F — The participants were asked if they owned a hearing aid: 0 = no, 1 = yes
  • column G — The participants were asked if they had their hearing aid in place at the time of the test: 0 = no, 1 = yes
  • column H — This is the total from their responses on the HHIE-S survey in English. They range in scores from 0 - 40. The participants were administered the 10-question questionaire in the hearing unit. They could respond with 0=no, 2=sometimes, or 4=yes
  • column I — This is the total from their responses on the survey taken in Spanish. They range in scores from 0–40. They were asked the same questions, but this time in Spanish.

Explain to the students that a spreadsheet is a way to store and use data on a computer. A spreadsheet is made up of cells. Each cells stores information which may consist of text or numbers. Each cell has an address. The address of a cell is given by the coordinates of that cell's location. The first coordinate will be a capital letter and the second coordinate will be a number.

Check for understanding with the following questions:

What is in cell B9? (69)

What is in cell C1? (Education years)

What is in cell I18? (6)

Where are the words “Tested with Aid”? (cell G1)

Which cell has the number 22? (cell H10)

Is subject # 37 male or female? (female)

How old is subject # 61? (76)
