Activity 4E: Calculating Statistics with a Computer

The students will use the computer to check their answers as well as their graphs. Use the following instructions to guide them on the use of the computer and spreadsheet.
 
(If your students have not done Lesson 2 then go over the components of the spreadsheet with them before beginning this activity.) 
 
 
These directions are for Excel. 
 
Statistics Formulas:
 
  1. Statistics for ENGLISH TOTALS
    1. Click on the cell H25 and type the following formula: =average(h2:h21)
    2. Click on the cell H26 and type the following formula: =median(h2:h21)
    3. Click on the cell H27 and type the following formula: =mode(h2:h21)
    4. Click on the cell H28 and type the following formula: =min(h2:h21)
    5. Click on the cell H29 and type the following formula: =max(h2:h2
    6. Click on the cell H30 and type the following formula (for the range): =h29-h28
    7. Select the cells H25:H30 by highlighting them.
  2. Select EDIT and then select COPY.
  3. Click on the cell I25.
  4. Select EDIT and then select PASTE.
  5. The statistics for the SPANISH TOTALS should now be displayed in cells I25:I30.

Bar Graph Creation:

  1. Select the cells G24:I30 by highlighting them.
  2. Insert a chart by selecting INSERT then select CHART. A chart wizard will appear.
  3. Chart Wizard Step 1 of 4: Select BAR. Click next.
  4. Chart Wizard Step 2 of 4: You will see a small version of the graph. The range should be "=SAMPLE!$G$24:$I$30". Click next.
  5. Chart Wizard Step 3 of 4: Under the TITLES tab, type chart title: "Hearing Handicap Inventory." The X-axis will be "Statistics" and the Y-axis will be "Total Score." Then click next.
  6. Chart Wizard Step 4 of 4: If you want the chart to be a full page, click AS NEW SHEET. If you want the chart to be smaller and embedded within the spreadsheet, click AS OBJECT IN. Click finish.
  7. Your graph should look like this: Chart Answer Sheet
