Activity 5A: Class Discussion Extension: East Asia Aging Fastest

Ask the students to look at the handout, “Percent Aged 65 or Over: 1990” and generate a class discussion using the following questions. Before beginning the discussion, the teacher may wish to have students label the continents and review which countries make up the developed and developing nations.

  • What are the continents with the largest percentage and smallest percentage of older people?
  • Are the largest percentages of older people in developed or developing countries?
  • Which continent has the largest concentration of older people?

Next, ask students to look at the handout, “Percent Aged 65 or Over: 2025,” and generate a class discussion using the following questions:

  • What are the continents with the largest percentage and smallest percentage of older people?
  • Are the largest percentages of older people in developed or developing countries?
  • In which country or countries do you see the largest increase in percent aged 65 or over?

 

Extension Activity

East Asia Aging Fastest:

The teacher may wish to discuss the possible reasons for China's tremendous increase in peoples over 65 of age. (See Handout — “East Asia Aging the Fastest” to stimulate discussion and lead into the next activity.)
