Activity Description
The student will construct a model of their brain. The students will work with a partner to measure their skull and use these dimensions to construct and label their brain model. Place the models around the room to be viewed during the remainder of the unit.
Materials
- Colored pencils and markers
- Scissors
- Scotch tape
- Photocopies of diagrams A, B, C, and D of the brain. One set for each student.
Process
- Label and color the parts of the brain on the photocopied diagrams. Below each label, write one function of this part of the brain. You should do this for both sides of the brain.
- Cut out the brain diagrams on the screened lines. Tape the tabs together to form a three-dimensional brain.
- Using your tape, attach the side pieces to the top of the brain at the tabs. Be sure to fold the brain where indicated. It is suggested that the students work in pairs.
- Instruct the students to try on their brains. Lead a class discussion covering the parts of the brain and the functions. Display the brains around the room until the unit has been completed.
