Brain

Lesson 2: Optimizing Your Brain
Topic: Brain Health & Brain Anatomy

Part of:
Unit: It's All in Your Mind

  • Focus:   It is important that individuals be aware and careful of how they treat their brain. Major contributors to maintaining an optimal brain are: diet, exercise, rest and practicing safety habits. A deficiency in any of those areas may result in deterioration of the brain's function.

Introduction

Lesson 2, "Optimizing Your Brain" teaches children about health promotion activities for protecting and optimizing their brain. Specific lessons are presented on health promotion activities related to diet, exercise, sleep, and safety habits that may all impact on how well an individual may be able to concentrate and learn new information. An activity on developing a protective device for an egg ("Don't Be an Egghead!") draws the analogies between the egg and the brain, the shell and the skull, the protective device for the egg and a helmet for the head.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • examine their daily behaviors and identify ways in which they can better maximize the use of their brain
  • will recognize the importance of protecting their brain through the construction of a device to protect the brain
