Unit Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • examine the structure and function of the human heart and blood vessel
  • compare and contrast the capacity of cardiac muscle and skeletal muscle kinesthetically
  • explore the concept of blood pressure
  • measure how changes in force may affect the amount of extension (stretch) in an elastic body

  • apply the principle of elasticity to human blood vessels

  • analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the heart model and blood vessel model

  • calculate and graph the velocity of blood flow

  • compare the velocity of blood flow in a healthy blood vessel vs. a blood vessel with a stenosis

  • predict what effect a stenosis has on blood vessels and the body over time

  • infer the effects of atherosclerosis on blood flow

  • analyze the effect of changes in pressure and volume on compliance

  • infer what happens to blood pressure when blood vessels are not compliant

  • identify risk factors for developing atherosclerosis

  • iInvestigate the effect of health choices on the progression and regression of atherosclerosis
