Embracing Diversity

Lesson 2: Spreadsheet
Topic: Language Idioms & Spreadsheets/Statistics

Part of:
Unit: Embracing Diversity

  • Focus: As computers become more available to students, it is important for the student to understand and use different computer programs. In the Challenges and Changes Unit, students can administer a hearing screening survey. The students will look at the data collected from a survey given to 100 participants; this data has been stored in a spreadsheet.

Introduction

Lesson 2, “Spreadsheet,” introduces students to the set up and structure of spreadsheets.

Background Information: The Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly-Screening Version (HHIE-S) was given to 100 participants. The participants first took the survey in either English or Spanish. The survey was readministered 2 weeks later in the language not used the first time. The purpose of this survey was to see if the HHIE-S had been translated properly. Ideally, the participants should have the exact score in both the English and Spanish, but as you will notice, that is not the case in some of the participants. The average score of the entire group was taken and it turns out that the averages are the same, thus telling us the two language versions are equivalent. A copy of the survey, both the English and Spanish version, can be found in the Challenges and Changes Unit. You may wish to go over this survey to better explain the purpose of this unit.

The spreadsheet files from the HHIE-S survey has been provided for you. The data is in two forms: Excel and Lotus. These formats should facilitate the ability to load the data into any number of spreadsheet applications.

(In Internet Explorer, you will need to "Save As" when the file is opened, then manually open your spreadsheet program. In Netscape, your spreadsheet program will open automatically.)

The three files are:

  1. SAMPLE : This file contains the sample of 20 subjects that is used in the lessons 2, 3, and 4.
  2. SHORT : This file includes data for all 100 subjects, but does not contain individual item responses for the HHIE-S. This data set is used in lessons 3, 5, and 6.
  3. COMPLETE: This file includes all the data for all 100 subjects including the individual responses to each of the 10 HHIE-S questions in Spanish and in English.

Each data set contains the composite (total) HHIE-S score for the study subjects in both English and Spanish so that the scores may be compared.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • analyze the spread sheet
  • compare the data from two spread sheet columns
  • write an analysis of the two spread sheet columns
