Nutrition and Aging
Lesson 2: What are My Daily Calorie Needs?
Topic: Nutrition and Body Image

Part of:
Unit: Nutrition and Aging

  • Focus: Maintaining a desirable body weight is related to longevity: the greater the excess weight, the increased risk for a shorter life expectancy. Overweight may cause or complicate disorders such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease,Type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. In this activity, students will learn how to use the energy input and energy output equation to help achieve and maintain desirable weight.

Introduction

Lesson 2, “What are My Daily Calorie Needs,” explores individual determinants of nutritional requirements in more depth. This lesson includes the use of nomograms, tables, and personal analysis to determine each students estimated daily caloric needs.

Background Information for the Teacher:
Review the concept of calorie and how it relates to energy. Discuss factors that may affect total calorie needs such as body size, sex, age, and physical activity.

top

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Calculate daily total energy needs and energy output.
  • Explain how gradual physiological changes during aging are related to changes in caloric needs.
