Key Concepts

current food pyramid, caloric values of foods

Process Skills Utilized

gathering data, multiplication, addition, graphing, classifying

Intended Grade Level - 6-8

Objectives

Using the USDA pocket guide of food calories and the new food pyramid, students will be able to:

  • determine their caloric needs
  • determine caloric values of food items
  • graph caloric values of meals
  • modify the caloric value of meals to more closely match their caloric needs

Activity Description

One Meal Deal Card describing complete meals will be selected by a student from each group. The group will define calories; collect data on food eaten and total number of calories eaten in the “meal”; and investigate how to maintain an energy balance to control weight gain and/or loss. Students will be able to apply what they learned to their personal food choices.

Activity Materials

Activity Management Suggestions

Arrange students into groups of four, providing each with their task card. Be sure to review group roles before beginning the activity.

Modifications

In smaller classes allow the “Chef” to select 2 meals.

Have students cut out pictures to match their selection; post them for display and have data (caloric values) attached.

Extension

Have students report on at least two opposing views regarding the following topics:

  1. How to safely reduce calories
  2. Which food groups should provide the majority of calories
  3. The dangers of omitting food groups from your diet

Use the website http://www.mypyramid.gov/ to more fully examine food groups and serving sizes
