Unit Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Identify the various air particulates in the environment

  • Construct air quality index chart define ozone and distinguish between stratospheric and tropospheric ozone

  • Explain how ozone can be simultaneously beneficial and harmful to humans

  • Identify ozone-related issues in their community and develop a community action plan based upon analysis of data

  • Explain the difference between obstructive and restrictive pulmonary diseases

  • Explore variations in lung volume among adolescents

  • Compare normal breathing to obstructed breathing

  • Measure vital capacity (VC), tidal volume (TV), expiratory reserve volume (ERV), and respiration rate

  • Calculate minute ventilation and inspiratory capacity (IC)

  • Make qualitative and quantitative observations & inferences

  • Identify independent and dependent variables

  • Gather, collect and analyze data

  • Determine mean, median and mode in a data set

  • Construct a box and whisker plot from a data set

  • Organize information into concept maps
