    Intended Grade Level - 6-8

    Objectives

    Students will be able to:

    • Describe basic properties of waves

    • Explain the relationship between energy, amplitude and frequency of a wave

    • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of technology to study waves

    Activity Description

Students will work in groups of four and use simple materials to generate waves of varying size. By generating waves using their wrist, elbow and shoulder joints, students will be able to draw conclusions about the energy required to generate various sizes of waves. A technology connection is included using digital camera(s) and a movie making computer program. (Windows Movie Maker is suggested, although any movie making program would work.)

    Activity Materials

    • Task Cards (these can be cut out and laminated to save paper and to make them reusable)

    • 10 ft. nylon rope with electrical tape on each end

    • Stopwatch

    • Digital Cameras (if only one is available, it can be used by teacher or just one group)

    • Computer Lab with computer for each group

    Activity Management Suggestions

Students should be placed in groups of four and should each choose one of the jobs on the task cards. Be sure that each student knows the job he or she is responsible for and remind students that in order for their group to be successful, each person needs to contribute.
