These teachers used the book reviews lesson 3B in which students read a book with older characters then reviewed it while looking for stereotypes, biases, and the general portrayal of the older characters. Once students had completed the review and had thorough notes on the book, the class had a Socratic Seminar. This is a student driven discussion with minimal input from the teacher. The teacher only offers lead questions to be discussed and promotes participation from all students. |

Description: |
Students linked up with "older friends" discussing several topics such as philosophy of life, pearls of wisdom, keys to healthy and happy life, the purpose of life, the benefits of a long life, and overcoming obstacles. Older friends were invited to the school and attended most of the day. They were the guests of the students and treated with respect. A luncheon was enjoyed by all. Guests told stories, shared recipes, and shared special skills. Ms Del Angel reported guests who sang, danced, sewed, and cooked. |

Ms. George linked up students with older friends. Students interviewed older friends about their lives then created biographies and timelines. Students also created "bio-poems" for their older friends. An "Older Friend Day" was scheduled where the older friends attended class with the students. Everyone had lunch together. Biographies, timelines, and poems were presented. Students and older friends shared "Words of Wisdom", things they have learned and wish to share with others. Students and older friends then completed a survey explaining the best and worst parts of the project, and offering suggestions to the teacher. Ms. George compiled a booklet which included all the steps for this project, handouts, and time schedules. |

A Six Weeks Unit with Spreadsheet Development and Web Research |
Description: |
Most of the activities from this unit deal with the growth of the aging population. Students learn about how the population has changed over time, life expectancy, percentages, graph interpretation, population pyramids, developed and developing nations, and the future changes in our population. Students became so interested in the topic that they directed the development of a spreadsheet component. Mr. Ferguson created a spreadsheet for the countries being researched by students. Students entered data collected from web sites, atlases, and other references. Upon completion of spreadsheet data, students developed their own criteria for what "developed" and "developing" countries were. Formulas were created so that once data was entered countries were categorized as either developed or developing. The culminating activity involved a group share out. |

Students illustrated the functions of the osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Some students portrayed human construction workers as the osteoclasts and osteoblasts. |

Health Advisory Program - School Wide
| Description of Health Advisory Program: | The health advisory program was initiated and coordinated by the school nurse, Ms. Maureen Mazur. The program occurred from January to May of the 2002-2003 school year. Every morning, a student read a health announcement. Once a month, each advisory class was given a health activity to do. Contests were also held promoting nutrition and physical activity. The winning students were given prizes and winning advisory classes were given Subway® sandwich parties. Eighty-eight percent (88%) of students participated in the program and the majority of teachers felt it was beneficial and important for their students. |
